Several UKRCC volunteers have worked hard to find Minky and Kato a new family, but as is often the case with older Raggies, their age has been against them so applications to adopt them have been few and far between. They need a very specific home and so finding a home for them has proven difficult. Over the weekend we received an application which shows great promise and a subsequent phone chat will hopefully be followed up by a home assessment very soon. So for Minky and Kato there was finally some good news. However this news has been tinged with great sadness, as Kato has been unwell over the past few days, with an infected, ulcerated eye. His vet felt that the damage was either caused by a foreign body or by Minky catching his eye during a sibling squabble. It was hoped that Kato's injury would respond to topical treatment and over the weekend his foster carer gave him a high level of care, bathing his eye regularly and monitoring him closely. Sadly, despite early intervention and all the care he has received, there has been no improvement in his condition and a vet check this evening confirmed our worst fears - Kato will now need to have his eye removed. The vet explained he has a serious tear in his eye and removal is the only option, as the eye is not going to heal. He is currently on metacam for pain relief, which is continuing. Kato is actually quite well in himself. He is eating well and happily cuddling up with his sister.
Kato will have the surgery over the coming days, so please keep the little man in your thoughts.
The potential adopter is fully aware of Kato's condition and is not put off adopting him. We are due to speak to them again later this week to ensure they are happy to proceed with the assessment process, with a view to adoption, once Kato is well enough to go to a new home.
Heartfelt thanks to Minky and Kato's foster Mum for all the love and care they continue to receive from her.
